The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the professional landscape by facilitating the emergence of the autonomous enterprise. In this new paradigm, tasks that were once performed by humans, ranging from basic operations to strategic decisions, are now handled by intelligent agents capable of discovering, negotiating, and transacting autonomously.

This transition towards autonomy raises concerns about the reduction of job opportunities, particularly in IT departments. However, the future of work will not simply be a matter of replacing humans with machines. In this context, while attention often focuses on AI agents operating autonomously, Alex Read, Senior Product Manager for Data at EDF UK, emphasizes that the true potential of AI can only be harnessed with strong technical skills in-house.

Read's team plays a crucial role in helping over 1,000 users within the company leverage AI agents. This team operates under a federated hub-and-spoke model, where data and digital professionals focus on technological enablement, while business units dedicate themselves to value creation.

"Context is king for AI," asserts Read. He explains that engineers must possess a high level of skill to develop the surrounding capabilities that interact with these AI services, thus highlighting the importance of in-depth technical expertise.

Agentic Course Correctors

However, even though agentic AI can enhance productivity, it cannot operate entirely autonomously. Read insists that IT professionals must collaborate with experts who have a deep understanding of the business to ensure the effectiveness of the agents.

"Success lies in applying this expertise to help AI agents be more productive and accurate," he adds. When technical challenges or inaccuracies arise, it is crucial to have someone who understands both the technical capabilities and the application domain to rectify the situation.

Results-oriented Collaborators

Recognizing the potential of AI is just the beginning of the process. A keen sense of long-term business purpose is essential for effectively integrating AI agents. Dan Cherowbrier, CTO of Formula E, states that professionals with this vision will excel.

"In my opinion, it's someone who can clearly understand the outcome they want to achieve," he explains, emphasizing that these skills will enable organizations to generate economic value through AI.

Cherowbrier warns against companies that will fail by trying to build agents to fit their existing processes, rather than aiming for the desired business outcomes. AI agents will therefore require precise direction.

Finally, Louise Newbury-Smith, Head of UK&I at Zoom, reassures that achieving goals through agentic technology will remain a human-centered process. "You need to invest in your work," she states. "It's about augmenting, not replacing, the human. This approach is crucial for everyone to remain relevant and contribute to shaping the future."
