A Technological Innovation Against Mosquitoes
Steven Cheng, an engineer, has developed an innovative solution to get rid of mosquitoes: an autonomous laser turret guided by artificial intelligence. This device, which replaces the traditional fly swatter, is capable of targeting and eliminating mosquitoes in mid-flight using a computer vision system.
Cheng's creation relies on a high-zoom DSLR camera and an artificial intelligence model trained on thousands of annotated images. This technology allows for the detection of mosquitoes, whether they are flying or resting, and eliminates them with precision.
In a viral video, Cheng proudly announced, “After four months of work, I have finally achieved the feat of using an artillery cannon to crush mosquitoes.”
The Essential Components of the System
To implement this defense system, several technological elements are necessary. A DSLR camera is used for the precise detection of mosquitoes, while an artificial intelligence model, based on computer vision and deep learning, is responsible for recognizing and targeting the insects.
The rotating turret allows the laser to be directed in all directions, thus ensuring complete coverage of the area to be protected. Cheng chose a DSLR body with a zoom lens for its effectiveness in detecting insects.
The Laborious Training of the AI
Training the artificial intelligence required considerable effort. Cheng had to manually collect and annotate thousands of images of mosquitoes, a process that resulted in numerous bites. This step was crucial for enabling the AI to learn to identify mosquitoes accurately.
Once this phase was completed, the training of the AI demanded intensive computational calculations, putting Cheng's hardware to the test.
Ensuring Home Safety
Installing a laser cannon in a home environment raises safety concerns. To avoid harming pets or causing fires, Cheng integrated a wide-angle camera. This camera detects the presence of people or flammable materials and automatically cuts off the laser power if necessary.
After testing his invention in real-world conditions, Cheng successfully eliminated all the mosquitoes from his residence, thus demonstrating the effectiveness and safety of his system.
