India: JioPC Accessible to All, AI Cloud PC Starting at ₹1,000
Key Takeaways
1Reliance Jio opens JioPC to all Indian internet users, regardless of their provider
2The service offers a virtual PC in the cloud, with up to eight vCPUs, 16 GB of RAM, and 1 TB, starting at ₹1,000 for two months
3PC replacement cycles are lengthening, but connectivity constraints, purchasing culture, and the lack of dedicated AI accelerators could limit adoption
Why it matters : JioPC aims to extend the lifespan of computers in India through the cloud, but must persuade users against purchasing habits and technical limitations.

Reliance Jio opens JioPC to all internet users in India, beyond its fiber subscribers. The service streams a virtual computer from the cloud, offering up to eight vCPUs, 16 GB of RAM, and 1 TB of storage, and is priced starting at ₹1,000 for two months. The company claims that machines up to eight years old can run AI applications without hardware changes. However, experts point out the reliance on network connectivity, the preference for hardware ownership, and the absence of AI accelerators mentioned in the specifications.

Connectivity, Hardware, and Purchasing Culture Pose Constraints

JioPC requires a stable internet connection, and any interruption can degrade the experience, unlike a traditional computer. This dependency could weigh more heavily in smaller towns and villages, identified as areas of high potential growth for affordable computing. In contrast, low-cost refurbished PCs offer a pathway to hardware ownership without reliance on connectivity, notes Bharath Shenoy. He also believes that Jio will need to convince customers that a recurring subscription compensates for the loss of advantages of a standalone PC, particularly the ability to continue working offline. Prabhu Ram does not foresee this model supplanting conventional PCs. Furthermore, the company has not detailed the hardware supporting its service, and the published specifications do not mention dedicated AI accelerators for on-device generative workloads, which are present in the new generation of so-called AI PCs.

A Virtual PC in the Cloud with Scalable Resources

JioPC involves streaming a virtual workstation from Jio's infrastructure to an existing computer. The offering can provide up to eight virtual CPUs, 16 GB of memory, and 1 TB of storage. According to Jio, this approach delivers the power required for AI use cases to computers that may be eight years old, without the need for replacement or additional components. The company bets that moving computation and storage to its data centers extends the lifespan of devices. However, this proposition, presented as an "AI-ready" PC, challenges the usual definition of AI PCs, which are typically associated with on-device accelerated functions.

National Rollout and Subscriptions: From ₹1,000 to ₹5,000

On Wednesday, Jio expanded JioPC beyond its fiber customers, making it a standalone subscription available to all internet users in India, regardless of their operator. The service, initially launched in July 2025, is now accessible to a wider audience. Prices start at ₹1,000 for two months, approximately $11. For twelve months, the subscription is offered at ₹4,000 (around $42) with 8 GB of RAM and 500 GB of storage, or ₹5,000 (about $53) for 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB.

A Market of 65 Million PCs and Slower Renewals

IDC counted over 65 million PCs in use in India in 2025, with about 34 million in the consumer segment and 31 million in enterprises. According to the firm, the total number of units is expected to approach 69 million by the end of 2026. In this context, replacement cycles are extending: Bharath Shenoy notes that individuals and small businesses typically replace their devices every five to six years, whereas in 2022, this period was four to five years. For enterprises, the duration now reaches about four years, compared to three previously.

Paying for Computing Rather Than Changing PCs, a Bet Yet to Be Validated

For Prabhu Ram, JioPC could create a market where computing capacity is purchased on demand rather than through multiple hardware upgrades. He believes that opening the service beyond the Jio base strengthens this proposition by addressing the traditional renewal cycle. The same expert sees the main challenge in the acceptance of cloud computing as a daily "utility," and in the willingness to pay for computing power rather than for a new PC. Reliance Jio, linked to the group led by Mukesh Ambani, presents JioPC as a way to make old computers "AI-ready" without changing hardware.
