India: Google Launches Dreambeans with 13 Languages and Privacy Controls
Key Takeaways
1Google launches Dreambeans in India, its first market outside the United States
2The app supports 13 local languages, but only one per story
3American downloads remain low compared to other AI apps according to Sensor Tower
Why it matters : Google is testing the international adoption of its personalized AI services in a key market while incorporating privacy options and language limitations.

Google launches Dreambeans in India, its first market outside the United States. The AI application generates personalized illustrated stories from connected Google services, with privacy settings and support for 13 local languages. Download figures in the United States remain modest compared to other AI apps, according to Sensor Tower.

Privacy, Visibility, and Control Over Topics

Dreambeans personalizes its stories from connected Google services using Personal Intelligence technology. Users can choose which services to link, disconnect them at any time, and delete their data from the app. According to Gozde Oznur, information deleted from connected services is also removed from Dreambeans' personalization system. Users can request to avoid certain themes, including business-related topics. The app is reserved for personal Gmail accounts, and the generated stories are only visible to the account holder. Oznur notes that Dreambeans' proactive approach may bring up sensitive memories, such as deceased individuals, but it is possible to block these topics, similar to memory controls in Google Photos.

Languages: 13 Supported, No Mixing in a Story

The launch in India includes support for 13 local languages in addition to English, including Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali. However, users can only choose one language at a time for story generation. Gozde Oznur indicates that Dreambeans can leverage information from multiple languages but does not produce stories that mix them. This constraint could limit the app's appeal in India, where switching between Hindi and English, known as Hinglish, is common.

Adoption in the United States: About 55,000 Downloads Since June

According to Sensor Tower, Dreambeans has totaled nearly 55,000 downloads in the United States since its launch in June. Nearly 63% of these downloads occurred in September, when access was expanded to all eligible users aged 18 and older, after which downloads dropped by 84% in October to around 5,500. In the first 30 days following this opening, Dreambeans recorded approximately 29,000 downloads. In comparison, during the same 30-day period, Sensor Tower estimates that Meta's Muse reached 7.4 million downloads, ChatGPT 2.8 million, Grok Bot 362,000, and Claude 155,000.

Functionality and New Features: From Static to Animation via Veo

Launched in June, Dreambeans uses Calendar, Gemini, Gmail, Photos, Search, and YouTube services to automatically generate personalized illustrated stories without the user needing to input a prompt. The app initially offered static images generated by AI. Google later added a feature that uses the video model Veo to animate certain images within the stories.

Why India and What’s Next

Google is rolling out Dreambeans in India, its first international market after the United States, on Android and iOS. This expansion comes less than two months after the U.S. launch for all eligible users aged 18 and older. Gozde Oznur explains this choice by a strong demand for access in India and the widespread use of Google services, with significant overlap among users of Gemini, Gmail, and Google Photos. Google is also working to make Dreambeans more actionable, going beyond stories and recommendations to help users act on the app's suggestions.
