The recruitment research firm Christian & Timbers recently revealed a striking statistic: in the United States, there are only about 2,000 engineers with the specific blend of applied AI skills, industry knowledge, and practical experience. These professionals are essential for helping companies maximize their investments in artificial intelligence.

The study, shared exclusively, highlights that these 2,000 engineers are not all available for new opportunities but represent the total existing talent in the country. This scarcity underscores a major challenge for companies looking to integrate AI into their operations.

The Rise of Field Engineers

As companies increasingly focus on the practical application of AI to enhance profitability, the role of Field Engineers (FDEs) becomes crucial. These engineers work directly within client organizations to develop and implement AI solutions.

The demand for these specialists is skyrocketing, with a projected increase of 2,100% by the end of the year, according to the Christian & Timbers study. This surge in demand highlights the growing importance of applied AI in today’s technological landscape.

An In-Depth Survey

This research is based on interviews with over 250 C-level recruitment executives from 180 companies, as well as a targeted survey of 80 Fortune 500 executives. Additionally, more than 300 FDEs and applied AI engineers were surveyed between January and June 2026.

The results of this survey show a clear trend: companies are increasingly aware of the added value that FDEs can bring to their operations, and they are willing to invest to attract these rare talents.

Growing Demand

At the beginning of the year, only 5% to 10% of companies were considering hiring FDEs, primarily for pilot projects. However, by the end of the second quarter, this figure had jumped to 70%, with major consulting and service firms looking to increase their FDE teams tenfold, forming groups of 20 to 100 employees.

Jeff Christian, founder of Christian & Timbers, stated that this growing demand is evident even during the summer months, a traditionally quiet period for recruitment. This demonstrates how ready companies are to act quickly to seize the opportunities presented by applied AI.

Limited Supply

The study reveals that there are about 17,000 FDEs in the U.S. market today, with a large portion already employed by Palantir, which popularized the concept of FDEs. Some companies are even purchasing Palantir technology to access these specialized engineers.

Only a fraction of these FDEs is considered sufficiently qualified to deliver a significant return on investment, measured in tens of millions of dollars. This can translate into increased revenues or substantial savings in processes like document management.

Implementation Challenges

Chris Taylor, CEO of Ode with Anthropic, emphasizes that while many FDEs can help deploy solutions like Claude Code, few possess the skills to develop cutting-edge AI features.

As the market shifts towards value-maximizing, companies must justify their AI expenditures. Christian predicts that Wall Street may soon penalize companies that fail to demonstrate a return on investment.

Pressure on AI Companies

AI companies have already spent billions developing their models. Their profitability will depend on their ability to integrate these technologies into as many businesses as possible. However, they face increasing competition from more affordable open-weight models coming from China.

To respond to this pressure, companies like OpenAI and Anthropic have created dedicated subsidiaries to disseminate their technology, staffed with specialized FDEs.

Fierce Competition

The battle for FDEs is not limited to large tech companies. The insurance, fintech, healthcare, and gaming sectors are also seeking to recruit these experts to safeguard their proprietary processes.

Some companies prefer to build their own FDE teams to avoid relying on firms like Ode or Deployment Co., thereby protecting their trade secrets.

An Uncertain Future

Although the demand for FDEs is currently high, Christian warns that this need could diminish if automation progresses. He envisions a future where agents automate other agents, reducing the need for human intervention.

In the medium term, the role of FDEs could evolve towards physical AI, with the integration of humanoid robots into business processes. However, in five to ten years, the role of FDEs could disappear.

Christian notes that while the AI sector is booming, other research firms have observed a slowdown in recruitment requests. For now, AI remains a field in high demand.
