Instagram Introduces AI-Generated Profile Label

Instagram introduces a "AI-generated profile" label and plans to reduce the reach of accounts that do not display it. This measure comes as AI-generated content gains traction on platforms and follows a period where Meta discussed coexistence between AI and human profiles.
AI Content Gains Ground on YouTube, the Web, and LinkedIn
21% of YouTube Shorts are AI-generated. 35% of new websites are entirely or partially written by AI, and LinkedIn is also described as being overrun by this type of content. Additionally, video generators have recently received significant updates. By the end of 2024, Meta was still discussing coexistence between AI profiles and human users and had attempted to launch official AI characters, an initiative that did not succeed.

Instagram Replaces "AI Creator" with "AI-Generated Profile"
The platform plans to replace the label "AI Creator" with the "AI-Generated Profile" label. For profiles that do not use this label, reach and recommendations will be diminished, with the possibility of adding the label later or contesting this decision through account status. This requirement does not apply to creators who use AI solely as a tool, while those who apply the label will benefit from maintaining their full reach. Instagram acknowledges that its users often struggle to differentiate these profiles from real people, and Meta emphasizes that internet users do not appreciate learning afterward that a seemingly human profile is AI-generated.
