Intelligent assistants like Claws and Claude have introduced a new way to interact with these folders. These tools can take control of your computer, act on your behalf, organize your files, and even execute certain ideas within defined limits. However, the most fundamental change lies in their structuring.

For the first time, users have the ability to organize their interactions with an assistant and the results obtained within a file system. Returning to a past task no longer requires scrolling through a long list of discussions with AI-generated titles. Now, you simply go to a specific folder and pick up where you left off. This development is significant, as the file system thus becomes the persistent memory of the assistant.

For those already using tools like Obsidian or Notion, this idea takes on an even more powerful dimension. Files are no longer just stored but connected, building a context that aids in reflection, thus becoming a second brain. These elements underscore the importance of AI systems capable of managing and navigating file systems, thereby unlocking an essential capability.

However, for this technology to reach everyday users, another aspect must be improved: the interface. The way we interact with these systems needs to be simplified and made more accessible. This resembles what Claude is currently exploring. While Claude Code seems powerful, it may appear complex, whereas Claude Cowork proves to be more accessible and usable for a broader audience. In the future, similar systems should see wider adoption.

Redefining the Role of Folders

A folder is not just a container, but a space with a specific purpose.

  • This folder contains all my academic archive files.
  • This one is for documents needed for my passport renewal.
  • This is a temporary deposit for items I don't yet have the mental capacity to organize.

Each folder starts with a clear intention, maintained as long as we have the motivation to keep it organized. However, over time, this organization degrades, files scatter and accumulate. One day, you find yourself adding a task to your calendar titled "Clean the computer."

Reflecting on this gap and what agentic AI can already accomplish, a simple idea has emerged: what if folders could be instructed?

Introduction to Folder Instructions

Folder Instructions represent a feature where you define what a folder is supposed to accomplish based on the purpose for which it was created. These instructions become a regulation, defining the folder's objective, how files should be organized, the behavior of subfolders, and the actions that can be performed within the folder or with the files it contains. Rather than manually maintaining a folder, you set its intention once and let the system comply.

To simplify, these instructions are integrated into the folder itself. You can access them from the context menu, alongside other folder options.

New Options in the Context Menu: Instructions and History

A folder can have multiple instructions. In addition to creating a new instruction, users can also review those that have been added previously. The idea is not just to perform a one-time action but to define a persistent behavior.

Note: This article does not delve deeply into the "Instruction History" or how past instructions are tracked and managed. This is a distinct layer involving details like conflicting instructions, logging, and maintenance, which are intentionally beyond the scope of this article.

New Instruction Interface

By clicking on "New Instructions," the user accesses an interface to enter instructions for the folder.

Based on my explorations so far, I have broadly categorized the types of instructions a folder can receive into three categories:

  • Collation Instruction
  • Operating System Level Instruction
  • Action Instruction

01. Collation Instruction

As the name suggests, these instructions traverse the system and gather a set of files that match the description provided in the instruction. The "gathering" can either be done by creating a duplicate of all files matching the description or simply by presenting pointers to the files (in other words, creating shortcuts).

There are two types of collation instructions:

  • System File Collation Instruction: The simplest form is system file collation. Here, you ask the system to gather files that already exist locally on the device and bring them into a single folder. For example, collecting all invoices from the Downloads folder, or moving all university-related PDFs into an archive.

  • Global File Collation Instruction: The second type of collation goes beyond the local system. In some cases, to fulfill a folder's objective, the system needs to obtain files from outside. This could involve downloading documents from the web, pulling email attachments, and combining them with existing local files.

02. Operating System Level Instruction

These instructions define how a folder behaves within the system. They do not concern the files inside the folder, but the folder itself. For example, making a folder password-protected, hiding it from searches, or establishing rules like automatically deleting files after a certain period.

03. Action Instructions

Here, things become a bit blurry and interesting, as action instructions fully leverage an agentic AI system. They define how the folder should manage its files. Instead of merely collecting or storing, the folder actively performs tasks. For example, sending each added file to a specific person, summarizing all PDFs added to the folder and creating a new document called "_summary.pdf," or renaming files according to a pattern.

These actions can apply to both existing files and new files added in the future. This is where the system becomes continuous. The folder is no longer static. It is always working in the background. A dormant entity, ready to spring into action!
