Apple Opens Siri to Third-Party AIs with iOS 27

Apple is set to transform the Siri user experience by allowing the direct integration of third-party artificial intelligence applications through a new extension system. According to Bloomberg, these applications, installed via the App Store, will be able to interact with Siri and Apple Intelligence features. Users will thus be able to send queries to services like Google Gemini, Claude from Anthropic, or Perplexity, in the same way that is already possible with ChatGPT since the launch of Apple Intelligence.

This new system will operate through a dedicated menu in the settings of Apple Intelligence and Siri, where each service can be individually enabled or disabled. A specific section of the App Store will guide users to compatible AI services. A message in the beta versions of the upcoming operating systems states that "Extensions allow agents from installed apps to work with Siri, the Siri app, and other features on your devices."

End of Exclusivity for ChatGPT

With this new approach, Apple is ending the exclusivity of ChatGPT within its ecosystem. Bloomberg recalls that the initial choice of OpenAI as a partner had sparked internal debates. John Giannandrea, then head of AI at Apple, had expressed concerns about the startup's longevity and advocated for a partnership with Google. Apple had even conducted an internal test among several AIs before choosing ChatGPT.

The extension system is distinct from the joint efforts with Google to rebuild Siri using Gemini models. This partnership focuses on the underlying technology of the assistant, while the extensions will allow users to directly request the Gemini service or any other compatible AI to handle their queries.

A Potential Revenue Lever for Apple

Beyond enhancing the user experience, this strategic opening could represent a financial lever for Apple. By directing subscriptions to third-party AI systems through the App Store, the company could generate additional revenue through its commission on in-app purchases. Thus, Apple would transform Siri into a distribution platform for artificial intelligence services while offering users more choices.

Apple is expected to unveil this system during the opening keynote of WWDC, scheduled for June 8, 2026. The release of iOS 27 is anticipated in the fall.
