Why it matters : iOS 27 marks a milestone in the integration of AI on iPhone, combining personalized assistance, family safety, and creative tools.

Apple releases iOS 27, a major update that enhances AI on the iPhone. The update includes a redesign of Siri, photo editing tools, expanded parental controls, and announced accelerations for apps, Photos, and AirDrop. The new Siri features start in English, with partial availability in Europe.

Faster Launches and Network Switching Announced

According to Apple, iOS 27 brings performance improvements: app launches can be accelerated by up to 30%, image display in the new Photos library by up to 70%, and AirDrop transfers by up to 80%. The update is also expected to provide a smoother transition between WiFi and cellular networks.

Family Settings: App Choices, Monitored Browsing, and Screen Time

Parents can now choose which built-in apps are available by default when setting up an iPhone for a child. The Ask to Browse feature requires parental approval before accessing a new site, with the request arriving in Messages for approval or denial. Screen Time gains allocations by categories—entertainment, games, social media—and schedules that limit usage to defined periods. Parents can compare screen usage to expert recommendations in child development, and Apple promises a redesigned dashboard with quicker controls.

Creation and Interface: New Photo Tools, Natural Language Shortcuts, and Adjustable Liquid Glass Effect

New AI-based photo editing features are introduced: Spatial Reframing allows for perspective adjustments after capture, Extend adds space to the edges of photos, and the enhanced Clean Up tool makes it easier to remove or crop out blurry elements. Apple also aims to simplify the use of the Shortcuts app: users can simply phrase their desired automation in natural language for the workflow to be generated, such as sending a message when leaving work with the arrival time. On the interface side, the Liquid Glass effect introduced last year can now be adjusted from ultra-clear to fully tinted.

Siri Scales Up: Dedicated App, Contextual Assistance, and Writing

Apple emphasizes a more capable Siri, which has long been limited to simple tasks like timers or weather updates. According to the company, the assistant now acts more like a personal assistant: answering in-depth questions, engaging in longer conversations, and searching for information from details in both Apple and third-party apps, with examples like finding a hotel confirmation in an old email or retrieving a café's WiFi password after taking a photo. A standalone Siri app allows users to review their conversations on other Apple devices. The announced writing features include starting or revising drafts in Mail and Messages, suggestions, and automatic proofreading, inspired by the user's usual style, including punctuation and tone, across many third-party apps. The new Siri features are initially offered in English, with partial availability in Europe, and this dedicated app represents Apple's biggest test of its AI ambitions. iOS 27, available since Monday, brings together these advancements with a revamped version of Siri and additional AI tools.
