Jacob Tsimerman, Fields Medalist, Joins OpenAI to Secure AI
Jacob Tsimerman, the newly minted Fields Medalist, is joining OpenAI to work on AI safety. This number theorist from the University of Toronto stated that AI is an extremely transformative technology and that society needs to dedicate much more effort to safety. According to him, mathematicians can make a significant contribution, as AI still operates primarily on an empirical basis with few guarantees about how these systems actually function.
Tsimerman also published a paper on "omnicide events" last year, scenarios where AI could contribute to human extinction. This position is debated among experts. Panic is not the right response, but we must honestly assess the risks, Tsimerman said. He is convinced that AI will soon surpass humans in mathematical research.
Former DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis also commented on the latest mathematical advancements in AI. He views them as progress, but not yet a fundamental breakthrough like the legendary "Move 37" from DeepMind's AlphaGo. For that, AI would need to solve problems like the Millennium Prize Problems. OpenAI's new model, Astra, has also failed in these areas, but it may just be a matter of time. "I see no reason why this shouldn't be possible," he says.
