The Rise of Traditional Networking in Recruitment
James Reed, head of Reed Recruitment, highlights an unexpected phenomenon in the recruitment field. While artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming an essential tool for generating applications, it paradoxically complicates the task for candidates looking to stand out. Reed advocates for a return to traditional methods, such as human networking, to differentiate oneself in a saturated market.
The Wave of AI-Generated Applications
According to Reed, generative AI has transformed the recruitment landscape by flooding employers with similar applications. This uniformity makes it difficult for candidates to get noticed. During an appearance on the BBC's "Big Boss Interview" podcast, he emphasized the importance of reconnecting with more personal practices. "Sending a handwritten letter in the mail can make a difference," he stated, stressing the impact of such a simple gesture in a digitally dominated world.
The Impact of AI on the Recruitment Process
The use of AI in recruitment has allowed candidates to customize their resumes and cover letters in record time using tools like ChatGPT. Employers, for their part, rely on these technologies to manage the growing influx of applications. Reed observed that while this technology has accelerated the recruitment process, it has also disrupted it. "We often find ourselves in a situation where AI is communicating with AI, without human intervention," he explained.
The Application Overload
Reed's company is facing a massive influx of applications, often generated with the help of ChatGPT, leading to a homogenization of content. LinkedIn's Talent Research 2026 survey reveals that the number of candidates per job in the United States has doubled since spring 2022. This situation complicates the task for recruiters, who struggle to evaluate each application individually, thereby reducing the impact of personalized applications.
The Challenges of the Job Market
According to a survey conducted by LinkedIn, 65% of the 19,113 workers surveyed believe that landing a job has become more difficult over the past year. Meanwhile, 93% of the 6,554 recruiters polled expect to increase their use of AI by 2026. Daniel Chait, CEO of Greenhouse, describes this phenomenon as a "vicious cycle of AI," where the increase in the number of applications makes selection more complex for recruiters.
The Importance of Human Contact
Reed encourages candidates to prioritize human interactions rather than relying solely on digital platforms. "It is crucial to connect with people," he stated, emphasizing that technology, while effective, has sometimes overly automated the process. This advice reflects a broader trend in recruitment, where companies are beginning to move away from traditional resumes in favor of skills-based assessments or direct contacts.
