The new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Andy Burnham, has recently made a significant decision by appointing Kanishka Narayan as the Minister of Artificial Intelligence, a role now integrated into the cabinet for the first time. This appointment underscores the growing importance of AI in the UK government's strategy.
Kanishka Narayan, who began his political career as a venture capitalist before becoming a Member of Parliament for Wales, had previously been appointed as a junior minister in charge of AI and online safety last September. However, his previous mandate was criticized for having an overly broad scope. Now, his role is refocused exclusively on AI, allowing for a more targeted and strategic approach.
This new position will be linked to the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, as well as the Cabinet Office. The UK is thus following in the footsteps of other countries like France and Canada, which have already established similar positions to oversee high-level AI development.
Narayan enjoys significant popularity in the tech world. Matt Clifford, former AI advisor to the government, expressed his enthusiasm on X, highlighting that Narayan has brought great energy and clarity to this role over the past year. Additionally, Liz Kendall, who was the Secretary for Technology, has been dismissed, marking a significant shift in the country’s technological direction.
