An AI Assistant to Transform Design
New artificial intelligence platforms promise to simplify users' lives by allowing them to describe their tasks to a digital assistant. This assistant then takes charge of planning and executing these tasks using the appropriate tools, while considering the user's preferences for future interactions. This approach is particularly valuable for design professionals, who seek automated and predictable workflows for creating content and media resources.
In this context, Canva recently unveiled the latest version of its AI assistant. This artificial intelligence model enables users to generate editable designs simply from text descriptions. By describing what they want, users can see the bot utilize the necessary tools to propose multiple design options. Thanks to the use of layers, users benefit from increased flexibility to adjust different aspects of the final product according to their specific needs.
A Strategic Update for Canva
This update comes as Canva strives to position its AI assistant at the heart of its users' workflows. The company continuously adds new features, such as image generation and website creation, to enhance the user experience.
At the same time, Canva's competitors are not standing still. Adobe recently launched Firefly, an AI assistant capable of leveraging various company applications to accomplish tasks. Meanwhile, Figma has integrated AI agent support into its platforms through an MCP server, thereby enhancing its capabilities.
Cliff Obrecht's Vision
Cliff Obrecht, co-founder and COO of Canva, emphasized that while many companies seek to integrate their workflows, many prefer to finalize their editing and publishing steps on Canva. "I think a lot of small businesses start and end their day on Canva, and they do a significant portion of their workflows entirely on Canva," he stated. Obrecht also mentioned Canva's effective collaboration with tech giants like Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI, allowing for seamless integration of content created on Canva into these systems. However, he insisted that users must always perform the final editing, collaboration, and deployment steps on Canva, thus highlighting the platform's strength in these areas.
Impressive Growth and Future Ambitions
Although Canva derives a significant portion of its revenue from individuals and small teams, the company is experiencing notable 100% year-over-year growth in the enterprise sector, according to Obrecht. The company, which has a valuation of $42 billion according to PitchBook, is considering an IPO next year, marking a crucial milestone in its development.
Integrations and New Features
As part of this update, Canva has introduced integrations with popular tools such as Slack, Gmail, Google Drive, Calendar, and Zoom. These integrations allow users to let the AI assistant build context by analyzing emails, conversations, files, and meeting data. Additionally, a new web search capability has been added, enabling the AI bot to browse the internet to accomplish specific tasks.
The scheduling feature has also been improved, allowing users to ask the AI assistant to schedule repetitive tasks to be executed in the background. However, this feature only creates a draft that the user must review and publish.
Enhancements to Existing AI Tools
Canva continues to refine its AI tools. Its AI code generator can now import HTML, and users can use text instructions to specify the type of tables they wish to generate.
The company has also optimized the efficiency of its AI models. Its image generation model Lucid Origin is now 5 times faster and 30 times cheaper, while its 12V model for converting images to video is 7 times faster and 17 times less expensive.
Launch of Canva AI 2.0
Canva AI 2.0 is launching this week in research preview, with availability expected for all users in the coming weeks. This new version promises to transform the way users interact with the platform, making design more accessible and intuitive than ever before.
