Google recently announced the launch of its new AI assistant, Gemini, in vehicles equipped with Google built-in. This initiative marks a significant advancement over the previous Google Assistant, highlighting the company's commitment to enhancing the driving experience with a more sophisticated conversational AI.
A Massive Rollout
Google's announcement follows that of General Motors, which revealed that Gemini will be integrated into approximately 4 million vehicles from the 2022 and newer models of its brands, including Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC. Although Google's announcement did not specify particular manufacturers, it suggests that Gemini could extend beyond GM vehicles.
The rollout of Gemini will begin in the United States, with initial support in English. Google plans to gradually expand availability to other languages and regions in the coming months. Notably, Gemini will not be limited to new car models but will also be accessible through software updates for existing compatible vehicles.
A More Natural Interaction
Since the launch of cars with Google built-in in 2020, this update promises a smoother and more natural interaction between drivers and their vehicles. Users will now be able to express their needs more freely, whether it's finding a highly-rated restaurant along their route or getting detailed information about parking and menus. Gemini's relevant suggestions utilize data from Google Maps to provide accurate recommendations.
Gemini offers a range of practical features, such as turning on the heating, providing directions, recommending music, retrieving vehicle information, summarizing incoming messages, and assisting with hands-free responses.
Gemini Live: A Real-Time Experience
Additionally, Gemini Live, currently in beta, allows for open and real-time conversations. Drivers can activate it via voice command or through the vehicle's interface by saying, "Hey Google, let's chat," facilitating brainstorming or learning while driving.
Users connected to their Google account in compatible vehicles will be prompted to upgrade. Once activated, Gemini will be accessible through voice commands, via the on-screen microphone, or steering wheel controls.
Google also plans to deepen Gemini's integration with services such as Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Home in future updates.
