An AI Voice Assistant for Rivian Vehicles
Rivian recently announced the rollout of its AI-powered voice assistant across its vehicle lineup. This new feature is accessible via a software update for owners of Rivian vehicles from generations 1 and 2. To take advantage of it, users must subscribe to Rivian's Connect Plus cellular service, which is offered at a rate of $15 per month or $150 per year. Users on an active trial period can also access this assistant.
Deep Integration into the Rivian Ecosystem
The voice assistant was initially showcased during last year's AI and Autonomy Day. It is based on Rivian's Unified Intelligence, a multimodal AI platform that integrates across the entire company. Although designed in-house, this assistant is enhanced by third-party models, allowing for natural interaction, sophisticated reasoning, and access to accurate data. It is capable of connecting to third-party applications such as Google Calendar, demonstrating its versatility.
First Impressions and Features
During a preliminary test of the Rivian assistant, while some responses were slightly slow, the range of tasks it can perform was impressive. The assistant can be activated via the steering wheel's scroll wheel or by using the voice command "Hey Rivian." During a demonstration, the assistant showcased its ability to read and modify events in Google Calendar, such as rescheduling a meeting.
Possible Interactions and Commands
Rivian illustrated several use case scenarios for the assistant. For example, owners can ask if a river is shallow enough to cross, display the view from their truck's bed camera, or combine travel information with sunset times. The assistant is also capable of responding to informal statements. For instance, saying "I need to clean up on the way back" prompts the assistant to locate a nearby car wash.
A Closed but Integrated Ecosystem
Unlike many automakers, Rivian has chosen not to integrate phone projection systems like Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. This decision allows Rivian to design an AI assistant that interacts directly with the vehicle's hardware. Thus, owners can use their voice to control essential functions such as heating, air conditioning, driving mode selection, and battery preconditioning. It is important to note that Rivian uses the Android Automotive operating system for its R1 vehicles and plans to extend it to its future R2 and R3 models.
Connection to Third-Party Services
For the assistant to access applications and services such as Spotify, Apple Music, or Google Calendar, Rivian owners must first connect separately to these services. Once this step is completed, they can ask the assistant to send text messages or search for specific information in their messages. The assistant can also answer general questions about the weather or news.
