Taiwan, a Key Player in the Rise of AI

When discussing artificial intelligence, California often comes to mind with its tech giants like Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic. However, these companies heavily rely on specialized chips to develop and deploy their technologies. This is where Taiwan, with TSMC, the world leader in semiconductors, comes into play. Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, recently emphasized Taiwan's crucial importance in this technological revolution, calling the island the "epicenter" of AI.

During his visit to Taiwan, Jensen Huang announced a dramatic increase in Nvidia's investments on the island. According to Reuters, he explained that four or five years ago, Nvidia was investing between $10 and $15 billion per year in Taiwan. Today, that figure has increased tenfold, reaching $100 billion annually, with projections potentially going up to $150 billion. Additionally, Nvidia unveiled plans for a new campus in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan. This campus will span 4 hectares and is expected to accommodate 4,000 employees.

A Strategy Focused on Proximity to Suppliers

Nvidia, while being a global leader in AI chips, does not manufacture its own chips directly. The company works closely with suppliers to provide essential chips to tech giants. By strengthening its presence in Taiwan, Nvidia enhances its proximity to key partners such as TSMC, which manufactures the chips, as well as Foxconn, Wistron, and Quanta Computer. These companies play a crucial role in the manufacturing of Nvidia products, particularly those intended for AI data centers.

The global dependence on Taiwan raises concerns in the United States, which is seeking to bring the production of certain critical components back to its shores. Despite these efforts, Taiwan continues to play a central role in the global tech industry, a fact that Nvidia's massive commitment to the island confirms. For Nvidia, Taiwan remains an indispensable pillar in the race for AI, while also highlighting the strategic importance of the island in other sectors, such as smartphones.
