Elizabeth Warren Warns of Financial Risks from AI
At an event organized by the Vanderbilt Policy Accelerator in Washington, DC, Senator Elizabeth Warren expressed her concerns about the dangers that the artificial intelligence industry could pose to the global financial system. Warren, who played a key role in establishing a financial regulator for consumers after the 2008 crisis, highlighted the troubling similarities between the current state of AI and the financial bubble that led to the recession. She acknowledged the immense potential of AI but warned against the risky financial practices of companies in the sector, calling for legislative intervention to prevent another economic disaster.
Rapid Growth but Uncontrolled Spending
The AI industry is experiencing explosive growth, but according to Warren, this expansion does not offset the colossal spending of companies. She explained that these companies are forced to borrow from private credit funds, thus escaping the strict oversight of traditional banks. Warren warned that if companies fail to increase their revenues quickly enough, they risk being unable to repay their massive debts. She also emphasized that dubious accounting practices could trigger a widespread panic, leading to significant financial losses and a crisis comparable to that of 2008.
A Dangerous Interdependence
AI companies have woven a complex web of financing, involving local banks, insurance funds, and pension funds. Warren used the metaphor of a climber tethered by a rope to several points: if one of them gives way, the entire system could collapse. To avoid such a scenario, she proposes to "cut the rope," meaning to limit the risky financial ties between AI and other economic sectors.
Towards New Regulation
Warren compared her vision to the Glass-Steagall Act, which aimed to separate risky banking activities from traditional commercial operations. She calls for the creation of a new digital regulator tasked with overseeing antitrust issues, privacy protection, and consumer advocacy. Additionally, she stresses the importance of not bailing out the AI industry in the event of bankruptcy, in order to hold companies accountable. "Accountability is crucial," she asserted, emphasizing that preventive measures are necessary to protect the global economy.
