Series of Departures at xAI: A Talent Hemorrhage

The young artificial intelligence company xAI, founded by Elon Musk, is experiencing a wave of departures among its co-founders. This week, Zihang Dai left the company, and Guodong Zhang is expected to follow suit in the coming days, according to internal reports. Zhang was responsible for crucial projects such as the coding agent and the company's video and image generation tool.

These departures are part of a series of movements that have seen most of the co-founders leave xAI. Following Dai's departure and the announcement of Zhang's, only two of the eleven engineers who co-founded the company with Musk in 2023 will remain: Manuel Kroiss and Ross Nordeen. The xAI badge has already disappeared from Dai's X profile, while Zhang has informed his circle of his intention to leave, although his X profile still displays the company's badge.

An Internal Reorganization Causing Waves

The departures of Dai and Zhang are not isolated incidents. Since January, several other co-founders have left xAI, including Toby Pohlen, Jimmy Ba, Tony Wu, and Greg Yang. Zhang, who reported directly to Musk, had recently taken on increased responsibilities, particularly regarding the Grok Code and Grok Imagine projects. However, despite these promotions, the departures continue.

At the Abundance Conference, Elon Musk acknowledged that "Grok is currently behind in coding." He attributed this delay at the conference to a coding meeting aimed at overcoming competitors. This statement highlights the internal challenges xAI is facing.

A Prestigious Background for Departing Talents

Before joining xAI, Guodong Zhang had gained valuable experience at Google DeepMind and earned a PhD from the University of Toronto. Zihang Dai, on the other hand, had worked at Google and held a PhD in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University. These prestigious backgrounds underscore the significant loss their departures represent for xAI.

When contacted, Zhang and Dai declined to comment on their departures, and xAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Since January, the company has reduced its workforce by several dozen employees, a decision Musk justified as a necessary reorganization to adapt to a new scale of operations.

A Controversial Restructuring Strategy

Elon Musk explained that the reorganization aimed to make the company more efficient. "Some people are better suited for the early stages of a company and less so for later stages," he stated at an event in February. This reorganization followed the departures of Wu and Ba, two close collaborators of Musk, and the acquisition of xAI by SpaceX.

The reorganization has had notable repercussions, including the announcement of Toby Pohlen's departure, who was leading the Macrohard project. This project is now on hold, and Musk indicated that xAI is collaborating with Tesla on this matter. These movements occur against a backdrop where SpaceX is preparing for an IPO, with a potential valuation of $1.5 trillion.
