OpenAI and Its Ambitious Advertising Strategy
Sam Altman, at the helm of OpenAI, is looking to transform the way the company generates revenue from ChatGPT. While the tool is widely used, the majority of its users do not pay for the service. OpenAI aims to capitalize on this vast user base by introducing advertisements.
OpenAI has made the strategic decision to abandon secondary projects, such as Sora, to focus on this new monetization path. This decision is part of a broader effort to catch up with the success of its competitor Anthropic, which is thriving by selling tools to developers.
Untapped Potential
According to analysts at MoffettNathanson, ChatGPT had approximately 900 million users in January, but only 50 million of them contribute financially. To tap into this potential, OpenAI plans to run advertisements, hoping to convert these free users into revenue sources.
Ambitious Revenue Goals
Despite the fact that OpenAI's advertising program is still in its early stages, the company believes it can generate $100 million per year. This optimistic forecast comes just two months after the launch of its advertising strategy. To this end, it recently hired an executive from Meta to lead its advertising sales.
Advertisements on ChatGPT are currently seen as a testing ground for advertisers, but they do not yet constitute a reliable source of revenue. Analyst Michael Nathanson points out that the company plans to charge advertisers $60 for every 1,000 impressions, although it is currently settling for about $15 for the same volume.
The ChatGPT Go Offer
OpenAI is also offering ChatGPT Go, a paid service at $8 per month, which includes advertisements for subscribers, just like for free users. The company hopes to diversify its revenue while continuing to provide free services.
