OpenAI Under Fire in Florida
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced via social media platform X the opening of an investigation into OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. This decision follows accusations that the artificial intelligence tool played a role in a shooting that occurred at Florida State University in 2025, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. Uthmeier stated that OpenAI's activities have endangered Americans and that those responsible must be held accountable.
ChatGPT and the 2025 Shooting
According to the New York Times, the attorneys for the widow of one of the victims are considering suing OpenAI. They argue that the shooter was in regular communication with ChatGPT prior to the incident. The Attorney General also mentioned the possibility that ChatGPT may have been used to assist the shooter in their preparations.
Other Accusations Against ChatGPT
In addition to its alleged involvement in the shooting, ChatGPT is also accused of being used in criminal behaviors, such as the distribution of child pornography and incitement to suicide and self-harm. These allegations raise questions about the responsibility of AI creators in the use of their technologies.
OpenAI's Response
OpenAI responded through TechCrunch, emphasizing that ChatGPT is used by over 900 million people each week to enhance their daily lives. The company stressed its ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of its AI, stating that it is working to understand user intentions in order to respond appropriately. OpenAI also expressed its willingness to cooperate with the Attorney General in this investigation.
Following the incidents of 2025, OpenAI has already implemented measures to enhance the safety of its AI, including identifying users with mental health issues.
