AI in America: A Growing Divide Between Adoption and Distrust

Artificial intelligence, although omnipresent in many aspects of modern life, elicits mixed opinions among Americans. From mobile phones to military strategies, AI has infiltrated various fields, but this does not mean it is well-received by all. A recent poll conducted by NBC News highlights a striking contrast between the proliferation of this technology and the perception held by American citizens.

This poll, conducted between February 27 and March 3, surveyed 1,000 registered voters on a variety of topics, ranging from border security to opinions on the new pope. The results show that only 26% of participants have a favorable opinion of AI, while 46% view it negatively. A percentage of 28% of respondents remain undecided or without opinion, leaving AI with a net popularity score of -20.

In the ranking of topics addressed, artificial intelligence is rated lower than entities such as U.S. Immigration and Customs, former President Donald Trump, former Vice President Kamala Harris, the Republican Party, and even host Stephen Colbert. The pope, mentioned in the poll, is by far the most popular figure among those respondents were asked about. AI ranks just above Iran and the Democratic Party, two subjects that are also poorly regarded.

A Gap Between Technological Advances and Public Opinion

Despite massive industry efforts to promote the adoption of AI, a significant gap persists between these initiatives and public perception. Tech companies are investing substantial sums in the development of generative and physical AI. For example, OpenAI recently launched its GPT 5.4 model, and several companies are collaborating with the U.S. Department of Defense to integrate AI into their operations.

However, this technological advancement does not seem to convince the public, which is becoming increasingly wary. Major concerns include the potential for AI to replace jobs, risks to data privacy, the spread of misinformation, and the devaluation of human labor. These concerns fuel the growing skepticism towards AI, despite ongoing innovations in the field.

For businesses and policymakers, the main challenge lies not only in creating new AI models or innovative devices but also in the necessity of gaining public trust. Convincing citizens that AI can be used safely and beneficially is crucial for its future adoption. Without this trust, even the most impressive advancements may struggle to find their place in society.
