A High-Risk AI: Claude Mythos from Anthropic
In the tech world, certain artificial intelligences can prove particularly dangerous if they fall into the wrong hands. This is the case with Claude Mythos, a model developed by Anthropic, which possesses capabilities comparable to those of a cybersecurity expert. This model can detect security vulnerabilities in software, which could potentially lead to a wave of cyberattacks if used for malicious purposes. For this reason, Anthropic has chosen not to make Claude Mythos publicly accessible, preferring to reserve it for certain organizations that can use it to strengthen their defenses by addressing identified vulnerabilities.
A Worrying Leak
However, concerns about a leak of this AI seem to be materializing. According to a recent article from Bloomberg, users of a private forum reportedly managed to access Claude Mythos. Although these individuals appear to have been motivated by mere curiosity to test the model before its official release, this situation raises major concerns. Indeed, it is impossible to know if other individuals, potentially with malicious intent, have also gained access. Anthropic, for its part, has not confirmed this information but has launched an investigation to clarify these allegations. The company stated, via Engadget, that it is examining a report of unauthorized access to Claude Mythos through a third-party provider.
The Impressive Capabilities of Mythos
What makes Claude Mythos particularly formidable is its ability to compete with the best cybersecurity experts. A recent publication from Mozilla highlighted the effectiveness of Mythos, which was used to analyze the code of Firefox. Thanks to this tool, Mozilla was able to identify and fix 271 security vulnerabilities in its browser. This demonstration of strength underscores Mythos's potential to enhance software security, but also the danger it represents if used for malicious purposes.
Precautions from Anthropic
Anthropic is considering making Claude Mythos or a similar technology accessible to a broader audience in the future. However, before taking this step, the company must ensure that the AI poses no risk. Currently, security technologies are being tested on another model, Claude Opus 4.7, recently launched by Anthropic, to ensure that such leaks do not occur again.
The Consequences of a Confirmed Leak
If the information reported by Bloomberg proves to be accurate, it would represent a major breach for Anthropic. It would mean that unauthorized individuals have been able to access an AI capable of triggering large-scale cyberattacks. According to Bloomberg, access to Claude Mythos was reportedly obtained through an employee of a subcontractor of Anthropic, using common analysis tools in the field of cybersecurity. While the investigation is ongoing, the prospect that Claude Mythos could be exploited for malicious purposes remains a significant source of concern.
