A Revolutionary Update for Stream Deck
The latest update to the Stream Deck software, version 7.4, introduces a feature that could transform the way users interact with their devices. Indeed, thanks to support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP), intelligent assistants such as Claude, ChatGPT, and Nvidia G-Assist can now facilitate the activation of actions on your Stream Deck.
Elgato, the company behind Stream Deck, clarified in its announcement that users will continue to configure their actions in the usual way through the Stream Deck app. However, with the integration of MCP, a new dimension is added: it is now possible to trigger these actions simply by making written or verbal requests to the AI assistant, which will then execute the command on the Stream Deck.
The MCP: An Emerging Standard
The Model Context Protocol is backed by tech giants such as Microsoft, Anthropic, Figma, and Canva. This protocol is on its way to becoming the equivalent of a "USB cable" for artificial intelligence, facilitating the direct connection of AI assistants to third-party applications. The update provided by Elgato thus offers an innovative method for triggering macro commands on the Stream Deck, whether for physical devices or digital applications.
Each action configured via the MCP is accompanied by a description field. This field is essential for AI assistants, as it allows them to understand precisely the nature of the action and the appropriate moment to execute it.
How to Activate MCP Actions
To take advantage of this new feature, it is necessary to update the Stream Deck application to its latest version. Once that is done, simply open the application's "Preferences," navigate to the "General" tab, and check the "Enable MCP Actions" option. This will create a dedicated profile named "MCP Actions," where all configured actions will be accessible to connected AI tools.
A Technical but Guided Installation
Fully activating MCP actions requires a few additional steps. It is necessary to install a Node.js tool as well as an Elgato MCP Server bridge on your computer. While this process may seem complex for those unfamiliar with MCP integrations, Elgato has provided a detailed and easy-to-follow installation guide, allowing everyone to set up their system smoothly.
