AI for Breast Cancer Disappoints American Radiologists
AI tools for breast cancer detection are not meeting expectations. A survey published in Clinical Imaging involving 215 members of the Society of Breast Imaging reveals that about half are already using FDA-approved AI tools, and 11% plan to do so. However, according to lead author Joud Almogati from UC San Diego Health, few consider AI to be a decisive factor.
The tools help, but not as much as radiologists had hoped.
- 35% report lower recall rates (59% expected this),
- 9% find fewer unnecessary biopsies (36% expected this),
- 29% report less burnout (56% expected this).
Most see AI primarily as a second opinion. Costs and lack of institutional support remain the biggest obstacles.
The AI industry may have contributed to this gap. Renowned AI researchers predicted about ten years ago that radiologists would soon lose their jobs. Similar claims are circulating again, this time regarding knowledge work on computers. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang described this type of prediction as a "God complex" among prophets of job loss due to AI.
