Palantir and British Financial Surveillance
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the regulator of financial markets in the UK, has recently engaged Palantir for a three-month trial contract. This partnership aims to leverage Palantir's Foundry platform to analyze a vast array of internal data. The goal is to better identify suspicious behaviors among the 42,000 financial firms supervised by the FCA, including major banks and cryptocurrency platforms.
Palantir will have access to extremely sensitive data, such as confidential investigation records, reports of banking fraud, consumer complaints, as well as phone call recordings, emails, and social media posts. This initiative aims to optimize the FCA's resource allocation in the fight against financial crime.
A Controversial Player at Europe's Doorstep
Alongside this development in the UK, the Pentagon has officially integrated Maven, Palantir's AI system dedicated to military targeting, as a permanent program of the U.S. Army. This system plays a crucial role in the real-time analysis of satellite and drone data for military targeting, particularly in operations in Iran.
Palantir, co-founded by Peter Thiel, a close associate of Donald Trump, is also involved in migrant deportation operations in the United States. These ties to the American security apparatus raise questions within the FCA. An internal source has expressed doubts about Palantir's reliability in protecting sensitive information related to money laundering threat detection.
Concerns About Privacy and Sovereignty
Financial law experts highlight the risks to privacy, reminding that FCA investigations can siphon thousands of personal data points. Although the FCA assures that Palantir will not have access to the encryption keys of the most sensitive files and that the data will remain on British soil, these guarantees are not enough to alleviate all concerns.
Palantir has already amassed over £500 million in contracts with public entities in the UK, including the NHS, the military, and the police. The use of Palantir's services by intelligence agencies worldwide, including France's DGSI, underscores the implications of this collaboration for European data sovereignty. Palantir's dual role in both finance and military security raises crucial questions about the management of sensitive data by a company at the heart of the American security apparatus.
