Colin Angle and His New Robotic Vision
Colin Angle, the former CEO of iRobot and creator of the famous Roomba vacuum, is back in the spotlight with an innovation that could redefine our relationship with robots. As CEO and co-founder of Familiar Machines & Magic, Angle has unveiled an ambitious project: AI-powered robotic pets called Familiars.
Presentation at the Future of Everything
These robotic companions were showcased at the Future of Everything conference organized by the Wall Street Journal. The Familiars, resembling plush toys, are equipped with microphones, vision systems, and audio capabilities. Designed to provide social interaction and companionship similar to that of a real pet, they stand on four legs and have soft fur.
A Companion for Everyone
According to the company's website, Familiars are ideal for those who want a pet but cannot own one. They are designed to be non-judgmental listeners, capable of engaging children in play and responding with affection, through cuddles and tail wags, based on body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice.
A spokesperson for Familiar Machines & Magic clarified to CNET that Familiars are not intended to replace traditional pets. "Pets and Familiars serve different roles, and households can benefit from either," he stated.
Emotional Intelligence and Privacy
Familiars are designed to be natural and emotionally intelligent, with their own personalities and the ability to learn and adapt to their environment. They even encourage breaking bad habits, such as excessive phone use. Colin Angle asserted that these robots do not lie and avoid giving advice on topics they do not understand.
Regarding privacy, Familiar Machines & Magic assures that data remains on the device, without relying on cloud-based AI systems, thus ensuring the protection of personal information.
Availability and Context
While the price of Familiars has not yet been announced, their launch is expected next year. Interested individuals can already sign up for a waiting list via the company's website. This project is part of a growing trend of introducing sensitive robots into our daily lives, as demonstrated by other innovations showcased at CES 2026 or by Agility Robotics for industrial environments.
