Perplexity Opens Its Personal Computer to All Mac Users
Perplexity's personal computer, designed to compete with solutions like OpenClaw, is now accessible to all Mac users via a desktop application. This announcement was made by the company last Thursday.
The personal computer is an extension of Perplexity's versatile, multi-model digital worker, known as the Perplexity Computer. This tool is specifically designed to bring these capabilities directly to the user's device, allowing AI agents to access local files, applications, and connectors, as well as the Internet. The goal is to manage each user's personal and multi-step workflows.
According to Perplexity, the personal computer "takes the computer out of the purely cloud-based world and places it on the device where most of your real work already takes place."
A Secure Environment for AI Agents
The demand for local AI agents, popularized by OpenClaw, is on the rise. However, OpenClaw has presented several security risks due to its high permissions. In response, solutions like Perplexity's personal computer are intended to offer a secure AI-enabled computing environment, although this remains to be demonstrated.
Perplexity's personal computer was first introduced last month but was initially limited to Perplexity Max subscribers and required a waiting list. Now, anyone using a Mac can try this software.
At launch, the software is capable of working with your local files, native Mac applications, and operating on the web. It can also orchestrate tools, files, utilize over 400 connectors, and leverage your personal context. All of this takes place in a secure development environment on Perplexity's servers.
Advanced Features and Integration with Comet
If the application is paired with the AI-powered web browser Comet from Perplexity, it can run web-based tools without the need for direct connectors. Designed to execute autonomous agents on a constantly active device like a Mac Mini, the personal computer can even be accessed remotely from your iPhone, where you can initiate tasks or approve requests from your device.
Perplexity suggests that this can be used for all types of work, such as working with spreadsheets, documents, and projects containing various materials. Since the tool can operate across applications, agents could do things like compare two files from different applications or extract notes from one application to create a draft in another.
Due to its general availability, Perplexity indicates that its old Mac application will be deprecated in the coming weeks so that the team can focus on the personal computer application.
For now, the new Mac application is available only for direct download and is not yet in the Mac App Store.
