The EU Invests 30 Billion for AI Gigafactories
The European Commission has launched a call for proposals to build up to seven AI gigafactories across Europe. The goal is to significantly expand AI computing capacity in Europe. Up to 10 billion euros in funding from the EU and member states is expected to attract at least 20 billion euros in private investments. These facilities would enable startups, companies, research institutions, and government agencies to access the necessary infrastructure to train and run large AI models. Eighteen member states, including Germany and France, are participating in this project.
The Commission has also signed letters of intent with AMD, Nvidia, and Qualcomm to ensure access to hardware. Applications must be submitted by November 12, 2026, with construction of the first facilities expected to begin in 2027. This project is part of the EU's "AI Continent" strategy.
For comparison, major American tech companies alone plan to spend over 600 billion dollars on data centers this year, and that figure continues to rise. The total package from Europe, at around 30 billion euros, is therefore about 20 times smaller. If all this computing power is truly necessary, Europe's investment would be just a drop in the ocean.
