Amazon Introduces AI-Generated Fictional Products
Amazon has recently updated its search bar to include images of products generated by artificial intelligence (AI). This new feature, available on the Amazon app, is designed to help users better describe the items they are searching for, particularly in the categories of clothing and home goods.
The idea behind this innovation is to allow users to select images that best match their search, even if they do not remember the exact name of a texture or style. For example, if a user is looking for a "shirt with a draped collar" but does not know the term "cowl neck," this feature could prove particularly useful. Conversely, it may be less relevant for simpler searches, such as a "blue t-shirt."
Comparison with Other AI Initiatives
This initiative from Amazon is reminiscent of a similar feature launched by Google last year. Google also uses AI to generate fictional images of outfits and decorations, thereby helping users find corresponding real products. Additionally, many online retailers are collaborating with technologies like Gemini and ChatGPT to further integrate AI into the shopping experience.
However, Amazon stands out by not using AI to create fake products in its "shop by style" feature. Instead, the platform offers AI-generated collages that include the sought-after clothing items. For instance, when searching for "denim shorts," Amazon presents a carousel of suggested outfits that include those shorts. The clothing items themselves are not fictional, allowing users to purchase the displayed products directly.
These new features will soon be available on the Amazon app for Android and iOS users.
