OpenAI Codex: New Features to Stay Ahead of the Competition

OpenAI recently announced a series of updates for its coding and development system, Codex. These enhancements aim to strengthen its capabilities against competitors, particularly Claude Code from Anthropic.

Among the new features, Codex will now be able to control desktop applications on users' computers. This background functionality allows multiple agents to work simultaneously without disrupting other ongoing tasks. OpenAI emphasizes its usefulness for developers, particularly for testing and iterating on interface changes or working with applications that lack an API.

Gradual Rollout and New Capabilities

The Codex update will begin rolling out today for users of the desktop application connected with ChatGPT, initially limited to macOS. OpenAI plans to expand to Europe in the near future but has not yet specified a date for expansion to other operating systems.

In addition to these features, Codex now integrates gpt-image-1.5, enabling image generation and iteration. New plugins for tools like GitLab, Atlassian Rovo, and Microsoft Suite are also included. Native web browsing through an integrated browser allows users to comment directly on pages to provide precise instructions to the agent.

Automation and Contextual Memory

OpenAI has also improved task automation with Codex. Users can reuse existing conversation threads, and Codex is now capable of scheduling future tasks and waking up automatically to pursue them.

Another significant advancement is the integration of a contextual memory feature. Codex will be able to remember useful contexts from past experiences, such as personal preferences or corrections. This feature, available in preview, aims to accelerate the completion of future tasks with improved quality. Customization features will be rolled out for Enterprise, Edu, and EU users "soon."

Increased Competition in the Automation Space

These updates come as OpenAI seeks to compete with giants like Google and Anthropic. The competition with Anthropic is particularly notable, following the successes of Claude Code. OpenAI hopes to catch up and solidify its position in a sector where task automation in coding is rapidly expanding.
