Two Attacks in 48 Hours Against Sam Altman
The residence of Sam Altman, a prominent figure in artificial intelligence, has been the target of two attacks within just 48 hours. The first incident occurred on April 10, 2026, when a Molotov cocktail was thrown at his home. Barely two days later, during the night of April 11 to 12, gunfire was exchanged from a moving vehicle, illustrating the growing polarization surrounding AI-related issues.
The San Francisco police responded quickly after the shooting. Amanda Tom and Muhamad Tarik Hussein were arrested following the investigation, and three firearms were seized. To raise public awareness and humanize his situation, Altman shared a photo of his family, emphasizing that concerns about AI are legitimate and that it is urgent to adopt new policies to regulate this technology.
Timeline of Events
On April 12, at 1:40 AM, a Honda sedan stopped in front of Altman's house. A shot was fired from the passenger window. Surveillance cameras captured the incident, and the security staff immediately reported the vehicle to the authorities. Thanks to the license plate, law enforcement was able to identify and locate the suspects.
Amanda Tom, 25, and Muhamad Tarik Hussein, 23, were apprehended at another residence in San Francisco. This attack followed an earlier incident on April 10 at 3:40 AM, where Daniel Alejandro Moreno-Gama, a 20-year-old Texan, allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail, damaging the outer gate without causing any injuries.
Profile of the Molotov Cocktail Suspect
After throwing the Molotov cocktail, Daniel Alejandro Moreno-Gama fled on foot. Less than an hour later, he was spotted at the OpenAI headquarters, where he reportedly made threats of arson. Investigators are trying to understand his motivations, but he has already expressed fears that AI could lead to the extinction of humanity through several messages posted on Substack.
The collective PauseAI, with which Moreno-Gama was affiliated via Discord, distanced itself from him, stating that he had neither a role nor support within the group.
Public Reaction from Sam Altman
In light of these events, Sam Altman spoke out on his personal blog. He shared a photo of his husband, Oliver Mulherin, and their child, an unusual gesture aimed at humanizing his situation and deterring further acts of violence. Altman stated, “Usually, we keep a low profile, but this time, I’m sharing a photo in the hope of deterring anyone from throwing a Molotov cocktail at our home, regardless of their opinion of me.”
He also acknowledged that the development of AI would not come without challenges and that the fears surrounding this technology are well-founded. He called for the formulation of new policies to address the upcoming challenges, asserting that we are currently experiencing one of the most significant transformations in our society.
