Google NotebookLM: Significant Updates with Gemini 3.5
Google recently announced major updates for its AI-powered note-taking application, NotebookLM. The app now utilizes the Gemini 3.5 model, which, according to Google, will provide more accurate and reliable information. This announcement was made via a blog post published on Monday.
Launched in 2023, NotebookLM is designed to interact with users' notes and sources using AI. With the latest update, it is now possible to initiate a research project simply by asking NotebookLM questions about a topic, without needing to import notes or YouTube videos. The app uses Google Search to help find relevant sources, thanks to its "discovery" feature that makes it easier to search for useful resources on the web. Users can then choose which sources imported by NotebookLM they wish to keep.
Integration of New Features
In addition to these improvements, NotebookLM now operates on Google's agentic coding platform, Antigravity. Each notebook within the app is connected to a secure cloud computer, allowing NotebookLM to write and execute code to assist users in their research. The app can also provide information in new formats and file types, including:
- PDF documents
- Data visualizations (PNG, SVG)
- Images generated by Nano Banana (PNG, JPG, GIF)
- Excel and PowerPoint files
- CSV sheets
- And more formats
This update is currently available for users on Google's AI Ultra plan and Workspace customers. However, Google plans to extend these features to other plans in the future.
