Current methods employed by Meta to identify and moderate deepfakes are deemed insufficient by the company's Oversight Board. This semi-independent body, tasked with guiding content moderation practices, believes that these methods are "not robust or comprehensive enough" to counter misinformation, especially during armed conflicts such as the one in Iran.
This criticism follows an investigation into an AI-generated video that claimed to show damage to buildings in Israel. This video was shared on Meta's social platforms last year, revealing gaps in the company's ability to effectively manage AI-generated content.
In light of this situation, the Oversight Board urges Meta to thoroughly review its moderation practices, particularly regarding the promotion and labeling of AI-generated content on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. The Board's recommendations are presented as particularly urgent to prevent the rapid spread of false information that could exacerbate international tensions.
