Anthropic has recently enhanced its Claude Code tool with a new feature called Ultraplan. This innovation shifts task planning for programming to the cloud, providing developers with greater flexibility. By initiating planning through the terminal, users can now allow Claude to develop the plan directly on the Claude Code web interface, freeing up the terminal for other operations.
The official documentation on code.claude.com highlights three major differences compared to traditional local planning. First, users can comment on specific sections of a plan, rather than having to respond to the entire plan all at once. Second, planning takes place in the background in the cloud, and finally, the finalized plan can be executed either in the browser or back in the terminal.
The Claude Code web interface also offers additional features such as inline comments, emoji reactions, and the ability to request revisions, thereby enhancing collaboration among developers.
To use Ultraplan, it is necessary to have a Claude Code web account, a GitHub repository, and to be running at least version 2.1.91 of Claude Code. However, this feature is not compatible with Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, or Microsoft Foundry. According to Thariq, an employee at Anthropic, Ultraplan consumes a number of tokens similar to that of the previous planning mode. Currently, Ultraplan is available in beta for all users who have activated Claude Code on the web.
