Google Chrome Introduces Skills for AI Prompts
Google has recently launched an innovative feature in its Chrome browser, called Skills. This update allows users to save AI prompts for quick reuse with just one click. It proves particularly advantageous for those using Google Gemini and other artificial intelligences, simplifying prompt management.
Features of Skills
The Skills feature offers several capabilities:
- Users can save an AI prompt and reuse it later by selecting it from a list.
- To access a saved prompt, simply type the forward slash (/) or click the plus button to choose the Skill from the menu.
- It is also possible to modify saved prompts and create new ones.
These Skills are designed to be used with the Ask Gemini feature in Chrome. They allow users to chat with Gemini in a sidebar, ask questions about the content of a web page, and even reference pages open in multiple tabs.
Examples of Practical Skills
Google has showcased a few examples of Skills developed by early testers:
- A prompt that quickly calculates protein macros for any recipe found online.
- A Skill that allows for side-by-side comparison of different products visible in multiple tabs.
- Another prompt that analyzes a long document on a web page to extract important details.
A Library of Skills to Explore
To enhance this new feature, Google has also set up a library of Skills for common tasks and topics:
- A Skill that helps find the perfect gift by comparing your budget with the recipient's interests.
- Another Skill that checks the ingredients of a food product viewed online.
Users can add these pre-built Skills to their own list, adjust them, or simply reuse them later.
Security and Availability of Skills
Some Skills will require your permission before executing, especially if they need to perform specific actions like sending an email or adding an event to your calendar. Skills are protected by Chrome's security measures.
Currently, Skills are being rolled out to all Chrome users on desktop whose language is set to American English. As the rollout is gradual, you may have to wait before you can benefit from them. Once available, you can access them by typing the forward slash while using Gemini in Chrome, then clicking on the compass icon.
