A Strengthened Strategic Partnership
Microsoft and OpenAI have announced a revision of their partnership, aimed at clarifying and simplifying their long-term collaboration. This new agreement emphasizes flexibility and certainty while seeking to maximize the benefits of artificial intelligence for the customers of both companies.
The Terms of the Amended Agreement
Under this agreement, Microsoft continues to be OpenAI's primary cloud partner. This means that OpenAI's products will be primarily available on Azure, unless Microsoft chooses not to support certain capabilities. However, OpenAI now has the option to offer its products to customers using any cloud provider, thus broadening its scope.
Microsoft retains a license on OpenAI's intellectual property until 2032, but this license becomes non-exclusive. Additionally, Microsoft will no longer pay a revenue share to OpenAI, although OpenAI's revenue-sharing payments to Microsoft will continue until 2030, with a fixed percentage and a total cap.
