Apple Bets on Privacy to Stand Out in AI

At the WWDC 2026 conference, Apple showcased its latest innovations in artificial intelligence, emphasizing a strong commitment to user privacy. While its technologies may not be the most advanced, Apple stands out with its promise of data protection, a significant argument in a competitive market.

The new features, grouped under the name Apple Intelligence, include an update to Siri AI. This enhanced version of Siri is designed to work across various Apple devices, such as the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro. Among the new offerings is a dedicated Siri AI app, providing a chatbot experience similar to ChatGPT, as well as camera and photo editing features powered by AI. Additionally, Apple is introducing the beginning of an agentic experience that allows Siri AI to interact with other applications and software on devices.

Apple clarified that request processing would occur either directly on the device or through its secure Private Cloud Compute system. This system, initially announced in 2024 during the launch of Apple Intelligence, ensures that user data will not be stored or accessible to third parties. Conversation logs will remain on the device and in an end-to-end encrypted iCloud account.

Collaboration with Google and Nvidia

Despite these advancements, Apple is lagging behind its competitors in AI. To bridge this gap, the company is now collaborating with Google and Nvidia. Apple's new AI models rely on Google Gemini and utilize Google Cloud infrastructure, integrating Nvidia GPUs, Intel CPUs, and Google Titan chips.

Historically, Private Cloud Compute was designed to operate exclusively on Apple hardware, with stringent security controls. However, with the integration of technologies from Google and Nvidia, Apple has established a "cryptographically verifiable append-only log" to ensure the security of the hardware used. While Apple maintains full control over the software, it cannot control the supply chains of Google, Intel, and Nvidia. Skeptics may argue that this longer supply chain introduces vulnerabilities that did not previously exist.

A Renewed Commitment to Privacy

During the keynote, Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering at Apple, reiterated the importance of privacy in AI development. He criticized competitors who, according to him, pursue AI without regard for the users it is meant to serve. Federighi emphasized that every step of the development of Apple Intelligence has been designed with privacy in mind.

Although Apple's privacy solutions are not entirely unique, they remain among the most comprehensive in the industry. Google, for example, has introduced Private AI Compute, a similar technology, but its implementation is less transparent. The privacy policy for Apple Intelligence, updated in 2025, specifies that Apple only collects limited information about requests processed by Private Cloud Compute, such as size and processing time, without any information about the content of the request or its outcome.

Apple also claims that it does not use private data or user interactions to train its foundational models. This commitment to minimizing data collection could appeal to privacy-conscious users, even if it means waiting for its technologies to catch up with those of its competitors.
