The recent decision by the White House to restrict access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 was influenced by research conducted by Amazon in cybersecurity. According to the Wall Street Journal, this research revealed that Fable 5 could be manipulated to provide actionable information in cyberattacks. This finding was shared by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy during discussions with the White House. Amazon has not yet responded to a request for comment.
As a result, the government has decided to limit the use of these technologies by foreign nationals. This measure has direct repercussions for Anthropic, whose many researchers are foreign nationals, thus preventing them from accessing their own products.
Anthropic responded by contesting the government's description of the issue, labeling the situation a "jailbreak." The company emphasized that similar vulnerabilities can be found in other public models, such as GPT 5.5. This position is supported by some security experts, including Katie Moussouris of LutaSecurity, who stated on BlueSky that Amazon's document does not prove a "jailbreak."
Former Commerce Department official Kate Koren speculated that the White House's dissatisfaction with Anthropic may have influenced the decision. Tensions between Anthropic and the government are not new. Anthropic and the Trump administration had been at odds for some time due to the company's refusal to allow its AI to be used for mass surveillance of Americans or to power lethal autonomous weapons. In February, Trump ordered federal agencies to stop using Anthropic's AI, and just hours later, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth labeled the company as a supply chain risk.
The government and the company seemed to have made amends, and both had collaborated to expand access to Mythos. However, the current situation shows a return of friction between the two parties.
