Fidji Simo on Medical Leave
Fidji Simo, who leads the deployment of artificial general intelligence (AGI) at OpenAI, has announced that she will be taking a medical leave for several weeks. This decision is motivated by a neuroimmune condition that requires her attention. During her absence, Greg Brockman, president of OpenAI, will take charge of the products, including efforts related to OpenAI's super app. On the business side, Jason Kwon, Sarah Friar, and Denise Dresser will ensure the continuity of operations.
Departure of Kate Rouch
Kate Rouch, OpenAI's marketing director, has also decided to leave her position to focus on her health. Gary Briggs will serve as interim in her role and will collaborate with Jason Kwon to find a successor. Rouch plans to return to a different and more focused position when her health allows.
Reorganization with the Departure of Brad Lightcap
Brad Lightcap, OpenAI's chief operating officer, has chosen to leave his current position to dedicate himself to "special projects" under the supervision of Sam Altman. Denise Dresser will take over much of his responsibilities, while the areas of government and OpenAI for countries, previously under Lightcap's purview, will be integrated into the company's strategic organization.
Context of Internal Tensions
These changes come after a challenging period for OpenAI, marked by controversies surrounding new terms of use with the Pentagon and the abandonment of Sora, an AI video generation tool. Hannah Wong, head of communications, had already left the company in January. In a memo, Simo emphasized the importance of creating a space for constructive dialogue on the transformations brought about by AI, particularly following the acquisition of the online show TBPN.
Confident Leadership Despite Challenges
Despite these upheavals, Elana Widmann, spokesperson for OpenAI, stated that the company has a strong leadership team focused on its major priorities: advancing cutting-edge research, expanding its user base, which is approaching one billion, and developing enterprise use cases. OpenAI claims to be ready to pursue its goals with continuity and dynamism.
