Record Funding for AMI Labs
The startup AMI Labs, founded by Yann LeCun, former Chief AI Scientist at Meta, has successfully raised over one billion dollars in its initial funding round. This impressive amount marks the largest funding round ever recorded for a European company in the tech sector. Notable investors include Nvidia, the semiconductor giant, and Temasek, the Singapore-based investment firm. This information was initially reported by Sifted in January. Other prestigious investors also participated, such as Cathay Innovation and Daphni from France, HV Capital from Germany, Hiro Capital from London, Bezos Expeditions, the investment firm of Jeff Bezos, and SBVA from South Korea.
Ambitious Goals for a New Era of AI
Yann LeCun had initially set a target of 500 million euros for this funding round, as indicated by a leaked presentation document. However, investor interest exceeded all expectations, ultimately reaching over one billion dollars. This substantial sum reflects investors' confidence in the startup's potential and its ambitions to transform the landscape of artificial intelligence.
Innovative AI Models
AMI Labs stands out for its innovative approach to developing AI models. Unlike large language models (LLMs) that focus on generating text or images, AMI Labs' "world models" aim to understand the physical world. The startup plans to create a specific model, dubbed AMI Video, which could revolutionize how machines interact with their physical environment.
A Focus on Robotics and Manufacturing
LeCun's vision for AMI Labs is to support companies in key sectors such as robotics, manufacturing, and wearable devices. These areas represent significant opportunities for the application of technologies developed by AMI Labs. The startup will be led by Alexandre LeBrun, former CEO of Nabla, a medical AI startup, while LeCun will serve as Executive Chairman.
An International Team of Talent
To achieve its ambitions, AMI Labs has recruited world-renowned experts. Mike Rabbat, former Director of Scientific Research at Meta, will serve as Vice President of World Models. Saining Xie, a former researcher at Google DeepMind, will be the Chief Scientist, and Pascale Fung, former Senior Director of AI Research at Meta, will lead research and innovation.
A European Ambition Against Tech Giants
Pierre-Éric Leibovici, founder and managing partner of Daphni, expressed his enthusiasm for AMI Labs' potential. According to him, the startup could become the first European company to compete with American tech giants, known by the acronym GAFAM (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft). He emphasizes that attracting international talent to Paris demonstrates that France is a conducive environment for this new industrial revolution.
