Fluidstack in Search of Colossal Funding
Fluidstack, a startup specializing in data centers for artificial intelligence, is currently in discussions to raise one billion dollars. This funding round could elevate the company's valuation to 18 billion dollars, according to Bloomberg. Jane Street may potentially lead this round.
If this deal materializes, it would represent more than a doubling of Fluidstack's valuation in just a few months.
A Look Back at Previous Funding Rounds
Last December, Fluidstack had already raised approximately 700 million dollars, reaching a valuation of 7.5 billion dollars. This funding round was led by Situational Awareness, a fund focused on general artificial intelligence, founded by Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former researcher at OpenAI. Among the supporters were also the Collison brothers from Stripe, Nat Friedman, former CEO of GitHub, and investor Daniel Gross.
Discussions for this funding round were still ongoing in February, particularly with Google, which was considering investing 100 million dollars, according to the Wall Street Journal.
A Strategic Partnership with Anthropic
Interest in Fluidstack is partly fueled by a major partnership with Anthropic. In November, Anthropic signed a 50 billion dollar contract with Fluidstack for the construction of custom data centers in Texas and New York. Unlike giants like AWS, Fluidstack's infrastructure is specifically optimized for the needs of AI.
This partnership represents significant support for Fluidstack, which had previously been relatively unknown in the United States. Anthropic, which primarily uses AWS and Google Cloud, sees this agreement as an opportunity to increase its capacity and better control its cloud infrastructure.
Strategic Relocation and Expansion
The importance of this partnership has led Fluidstack to move its headquarters from the UK to New York. Last month, the startup also decided to withdraw from a major 10 billion euro project in France to focus on American opportunities.
In addition to Anthropic, Fluidstack counts companies like Meta, Poolside, and Black Forest Labs among its clients. Before this agreement, Fluidstack was primarily recognized for providing infrastructure to Mistral.
Fluidstack has not yet responded to requests for comments regarding these developments.
