Prometheus and Bezos: $12 Billion for Industrial AI

Prometheus, the startup co-founded by Jeff Bezos and Vik Bajaj, former co-founder of Verily, has recently completed an impressive funding round of $12 billion. This operation, backed by financial giants such as JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and BlackRock, is one of the largest ever conducted in the artificial intelligence sector, bringing the company's valuation to $41 billion, according to CNBC.

Officially launched a few months ago, Prometheus had already raised $6.2 billion by the end of the previous year. In less than a year, it has established itself as a major player in the field of artificial intelligence, despite maintaining a high level of discretion regarding its technological developments.

An AI for Industrial Engineering

Prometheus stands out for its ambition to create a "general artificial engineer," an AI platform capable of automating the design and manufacturing of complex physical systems. Unlike conversational assistants or content generation tools, this technology aims to intervene in areas reserved for highly skilled engineers.

Potential applications include the design of jet engines and the development of new pharmaceutical compounds. If Prometheus succeeds, the impact on industrial sectors could be significant, with reductions in design cycles, acceleration of prototyping phases, and decreased research and development costs.

Strategic Discretion

Despite its disruptive potential, Prometheus remains discreet about the details of its technologies and their maturity. The company employs around 150 people spread across San Francisco, London, and Zurich. A significant portion of the new funds will be invested in the computing infrastructure necessary to train and operate its AI models, a common challenge for advanced AI startups.

Prometheus's funding round highlights the rise of physical AI, which addresses industrial and scientific challenges with real-world constraints. Jeff Bezos, in particular, advocates an optimistic view of the impact of AI on employment. According to him, productivity gains could lead to a "labor shortage," where the demand for human labor exceeds supply.
