OpenAI Partners with Singapore for a Digital Future
At the ATx summit in Singapore, OpenAI announced the launch of its OpenAI for Singapore initiative. This strategic partnership with the Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) aims to support the country's national artificial intelligence strategy. Singapore, recognized as a global leader in AI, has integrated this technology at the heart of its economic development, public services, and education plans. The country quickly understood that AI has become an essential infrastructure capable of boosting productivity, creativity, scientific progress, and opening new economic opportunities.
The OpenAI for Singapore initiative is part of a vision where artificial intelligence becomes a public service. With funding of over 300 million Singapore dollars, it focuses on three main areas: helping local organizations adopt advanced AI technologies, developing AI talent, and expanding access to AI for businesses and individuals in Singapore.
“We are excited to collaborate with Singapore, which is strengthening its position as a global leader in AI. With its technical talent, reliable institutions, and clear ambition to use AI to drive growth and improve citizens' lives, Singapore is an ideal partner. Through OpenAI for Singapore, we aim to help more organizations leverage cutting-edge AI, support the next generation of local AI talent, and broaden access to these tools across the country.” — Denise Dresser, Chief Revenue Officer at OpenAI
An Applied AI Lab for Innovative Solutions
At the heart of this partnership is the creation of the Applied AI Lab in Singapore, the first of its kind for OpenAI outside the United States. This lab plans to create over 200 technical positions in the coming years, making Singapore a global hub for Frontline Engineers.
These engineers, at the intersection of advanced research and practical application, will work directly with businesses to solve complex problems and discover new sources of value. The lab will support projects aligned with Singapore's AI Mission priorities, particularly in the public services, finance, healthcare, and digital infrastructure sectors. As the Singapore-based team grows, OpenAI plans to expand its offices in the country.
“With AI redefining economies, businesses, and the workforce, Singapore has chosen a thoughtful approach: developing new sectors, attracting leading companies, and equipping our population with the skills needed to thrive in this environment. This partnership with OpenAI reflects our commitment to enhancing Singapore's AI capabilities, encouraging AI adoption by businesses, and ensuring good jobs for Singaporeans.” — Mr. Chng Kai Fong, Permanent Secretary (Digital Development and Information)
“We are thrilled by OpenAI's decision to expand its applied AI engineering capabilities in Singapore. This investment offers exciting opportunities for Singaporeans and highlights Singapore's growing role as a global hub for AI innovation. We look forward to collaborating with OpenAI to support AI adoption in Singapore's economy.” — Mr. Philbert Gomez, Senior Vice President and Head of the Digital Industry in Singapore
Training Tomorrow's Talent
Through OpenAI for Singapore, OpenAI will collaborate with the government and local partners to develop the skills necessary for a future shaped by AI. This includes partnerships with the Ministry of Education and GovTech to create AI-based use cases and learning tools, such as interactive materials for learning native languages.
OpenAI will also support educators through a Singapore chapter of the OpenAI Academy and Codex for Teachers hackathons. A training program for Frontline Engineers will be launched to develop local talent in AI deployment. Additionally, OpenAI will participate in the National AI Impact Program to strengthen AI capabilities within the tech workforce, particularly through the use of Codex.
Extending the Benefits of AI to All
The goal of OpenAI for Singapore is to ensure that the benefits of AI reach all layers of the economy, not just large companies or technology developers. OpenAI will work with local partners to help more individuals and businesses benefit from AI. This includes exploring accelerator programs for AI-focused startups and collaborating on workshops for micro-entrepreneurs and small businesses.
These efforts will focus on practical adoption, helping founders integrate AI into their projects and assisting SMEs in improving their operations and customer service. OpenAI for Singapore emphasizes both people and technology, investing in cutting-edge deployment, next-generation AI talent, and access across the economy. OpenAI aims to be a long-term partner as Singapore prepares to become an AI-ready economy in a useful, responsible, and broadly beneficial manner.
