Krishna Rao, CFO of Anthropic, recently shared revealing insights about the evolution of work methods within the company thanks to artificial intelligence. According to him, AI has drastically reduced the time needed to complete office tasks, thereby transforming traditional roles into supervisory positions. This transformation is made possible by Claude, the AI developed by Anthropic, which is now responsible for writing 90% of the company's code and managing many financial operations.

During his appearance on the "Invest Like the Best" podcast hosted by Patrick O'Shaughnessy, Rao described a work environment where AI systems handle most of the intellectual work, ranging from software engineering to financial reporting. Employees, in turn, focus on supervisory, judgment, and strategic tasks, fundamentally changing the nature of their daily work.

Rao also emphasized that this automation has allowed Anthropic to hire more people while increasing the productivity of new recruits through the use of Claude. "We have hired many more people because of this," he stated, adding that Claude acts as a true productivity accelerator. Employees become more efficient as they adapt to using AI, a phenomenon that is beginning to spread across many other companies.

A Redefinition of Office Jobs

Rao's comments provide insight into how artificial intelligence could redefine office jobs. Rather than replacing workers, AI automates a significant portion of their daily tasks, transforming employees into supervisors of automated systems. This evolution is already underway at Anthropic, where over 90% of the code is generated by Claude Code, the company's coding product.

The financial team at Anthropic is also undergoing a similar transformation. Claude is used to produce financial statements, and the monthly financial review process is now almost entirely automated, with 90 to 95% of the preparation completed before humans intervene for final analysis. "What used to take hours to produce," Rao explained, "now takes only 30 minutes."

Rao asserted that these productivity gains allow employees to spend less time gathering information and more time making strategic decisions. "I think of this as enhancing and accelerating the talent we already have," he clarified. He stressed the importance of talent density over talent mass, emphasizing that the goal is to bring together the best talent in AI research and inference engineering, combined with the best models, to create a winning synergy.

The Effect of AI on the Workforce

As details about the use of AI by Anthropic's staff become clearer, many companies across various sectors are looking to integrate this technology into their operations. Some actively encourage their employees to adopt AI, while others are downsizing, citing the new efficiencies brought about by automation.

This shift fuels a debate among economists and business leaders about the future of employment. Some fear that automation will eliminate jobs faster than they can be created, while others believe that productivity gains could ultimately increase labor demand.

According to Rao, the increase in productivity through AI could lead to an expansion in hiring, as "there is no shortage of work to be done." However, he acknowledges that the nature of office work is rapidly evolving. Employees are increasingly supervising AI systems rather than performing tasks manually, and teams are deploying "fleets of agents" working simultaneously on multiple projects.

"Everyone is becoming somewhat of a manager," he stated, highlighting that the implications of this transformation and the resulting productivity gains are just beginning to manifest, but the potential is immense.
