Tim Cook Passes the Torch to John Ternus
In September, Tim Cook will step down as CEO of Apple, a position he has held since 2011. John Ternus, a 25-year veteran at Apple, will take over. Currently the Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, Ternus was chosen for his deep knowledge of Apple's hardware products.
Tim Cook's Impressive Journey
Tim Cook succeeded Steve Jobs in 2011, a task that many considered nearly impossible. However, Cook not only rose to this challenge but also exceeded expectations in many areas. In 2013, Alistair Barr labeled Cook a "loser," but he has since acknowledged his mistake, now referring to him as "the ultimate non-founder success story."
Under Cook's leadership, Apple launched iconic products such as the AirPods and the Apple Watch, and expanded its presence in China. The services sector has become a major revenue source for the company. The Apple Vision Pro and the car concept have also been notable initiatives, although not always successful.
Most importantly for investors, Apple's stock has increased by nearly 2,000% during Cook's tenure, far surpassing the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100.
A Unique Strategy in the AI War
John Ternus's selection as CEO reflects Apple's distinct strategy in the field of artificial intelligence. While other tech giants are heavily investing in AI, Apple has chosen to focus on its hardware products, particularly the iPhone, which continues to appeal to a broad audience. This approach forces other companies to collaborate with Apple to reach users with their AI technologies.
Future Challenges for Apple
Peter Kafka of Business Insider points out that Cook did not need to launch a product as monumental as the iPhone to be considered extremely successful. Cook also benefited from the fact that no one else had created something that truly threatened the iPhone.
However, rumors are circulating about AI wearables being the next big trend. So far, these technologies have not yet achieved the expected success. If Apple fails to establish itself in this new technological era, Ternus's selection and the end of Cook's tenure may be reevaluated in a different light.
