Sergey Brin: AI and Go, Catalysts for Human Skills

Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, recently shared his vision on the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on human work, using the game of Go as an example. Contrary to the notion that AI could replace humans, Brin suggests that AI could encourage humans to enhance their performance.

During an informal discussion at the Google DeepMind Build Day at AGI House, Brin mentioned AlphaGo, Google's AI program that challenged top Go players, Lee Sedol and Ke Jie. These confrontations pushed these players to refine their skills, illustrating how AI can stimulate the evolution of human capabilities. "By the way, since AlphaGo, the game of Go has evolved a lot," he stated, emphasizing that players who faced AlphaGo saw their skills improve.

Lee Sedol, who was one of the world's top Go players and a multiple-time international champion, won one of the five games against AlphaGo in March 2016. Ke Jie, then ranked number one in the world, faced AlphaGo in 2017 and lost all his matches. According to Brin, these matches contributed to advancing the level of the game of Go.

Go, a board game originating from China, is played by two players and involves controlling more territory than the opponent by placing black and white stones on a grid. Despite the superiority of computers in this domain, Brin emphasizes that this has not prevented humans from continuing to improve and enjoy the game. "The fact that computers can do certain things well has not actually prevented humans from getting better and better, gaining more recognition, and enjoying these activities," he added.

Brin's remarks fit into a broader debate about the impact of AI on employment. A Quinnipiac University survey reveals that 30% of Americans fear that AI will render their jobs obsolete. However, evidence of widespread job losses due to AI remains limited. Instead, much of the discussion in Silicon Valley has shifted towards how AI is changing the nature of work, allowing people to focus more on judgment, creativity, and decision-making, while machines handle routine tasks.

Leaders like Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce, Luis von Ahn, CEO of Duolingo, and Kelsey Hightower, former distinguished engineer at Google, have recently asserted that interpersonal skills such as empathy, communication, and relationship-building cannot be replaced by AI. According to them, these skills will remain crucial in an increasingly automated world.

Brin also highlighted that while computers are capable of excelling in certain tasks, they have not prevented humans from improving and receiving increased recognition in these areas. He expressed his belief that AI could accomplish surprising things while helping people progress in various fields. The debate over AI continues, with some fearing it will replace workers, while others see it as an opportunity to enhance human capabilities.
