Boris Cherny and the Nighttime Automation of Claude Code
Boris Cherny, the lead engineer behind Claude Code, recently unveiled his innovative use of AI agents. He revealed that he operates "a few thousand" AI coding agents overnight, primarily managing them through his phone. This approach allows for more in-depth work without direct human intervention.
In an interview with Sequoia Capital on May 4, Cherny described how he utilizes these AI agents, highlighting a growing trend among Silicon Valley engineers to leverage AI systems as autonomous assistants. He showed his phone to the audience, explaining: "I have the Claude app, and if you open the Claude app, on the left side, there's this code tab, and I just have a multitude of sessions going on."
Key Features: /loops and Routines
Cherny highlighted two essential features of Claude Code: /loops and Routines. These tools enable users to efficiently schedule recurring tasks. /loops can be programmed locally via cron, offering flexibility to automate specific tasks. Meanwhile, Routines execute recurring tasks on a server, allowing engineers to keep their agents active even after shutting down their laptops.
When asked how many sessions he managed, Cherny responded that he typically maintains "five to ten sessions," each containing several agents. "Usually, every night, I have a few thousand doing more in-depth work," he added, emphasizing the efficiency of this system.
Sharing and Impact of Cherny's Setup
In January, Cherny had already shared his setup on X, calling it "surprising but basic." This post went viral, garnering over 104,000 saves and 8.1 million views. During the interview, Cherny expressed his surprise at the interest generated by his approach, which he considers a personal coding method.
He encouraged those who have not yet experimented with these features to do so, stating that it's "the coolest thing." This innovative use of AI agents could very well transform the working practices of engineers.
