Anthropic Prepares for Its IPO
Anthropic, a startup founded by former OpenAI employees, has recently announced its intention to go public. This decision was made public after the company filed its paperwork with the SEC, the U.S. financial markets regulator. According to Anthropic's statement, this IPO will depend on market conditions and other factors that will be assessed following the SEC's review.
This announcement comes shortly after an impressive Series H funding round, where Anthropic managed to raise $65 billion. This funding has propelled the company's valuation to $965 billion, surpassing that of its main rival, OpenAI.
Impressive Financial Growth
Despite the popularity of ChatGPT, OpenAI's chatbot, Anthropic is showing remarkable financial growth. The features of its AI, Claude, aimed at professionals and businesses, have contributed to this expansion. In February, Anthropic's annualized revenue was $16 billion. Today, that revenue has surged to $47 billion. There are also rumors about the company potentially becoming profitable as early as this second quarter.
Anthropic stands out due to the performance of its AI, Claude, which is currently ranked as the top performer in the market by Artificial Analysis. This ranking is based on several assessments that highlight Claude's superior capabilities compared to its competitors.
A Break from OpenAI at the Origin of Anthropic
Anthropic's success could be seen as a vindication for Dario Amodei, the company's CEO. A former employee of OpenAI, Amodei left the company with several colleagues to found Anthropic due to differences in vision. In an interview with Nikhil Kamath's YouTube channel in February, Amodei explained that he preferred to follow his own path rather than contest OpenAI's vision. "My view has always been not to contest someone else's vision," he stated. "If you have a strong vision and you share it with a few others, you should just go your own way and follow your own path; then you will be solely responsible for your mistakes." This philosophy seems to be paying off today, as Anthropic prepares to go public ahead of OpenAI, marking a significant milestone in their rivalry.
