David Heinemeier Hansson, the creator of Ruby on Rails, emphasizes the crucial role of senior developers in the current era of agentic artificial intelligence. According to him, these experienced engineers are best positioned to effectively utilize AI-based coding tools.

Hansson explained that senior developers are capable of spotting errors in the code generated by AI, making them essential in this new technological era. He shared these insights during an interview for "The Pragmatic Engineer," a podcast and newsletter published recently.

Challenges for Junior Developers

Hansson, who co-leads the software company 37signals, pointed out that junior developers have not yet acquired the foundational knowledge necessary to assess the reliability of the code produced by AI. He stressed that for critical tasks, it is still risky to rely solely on AI agents without validation from an experienced developer.

The Effectiveness of Seniors at 37signals

Within 37signals, Hansson has observed that senior engineers are particularly effective when working with multiple AI agents simultaneously. They can not only manage several tasks in parallel but also evaluate the quality of the results provided by the AI and adjust processes as needed.

A Case of Failure: The Amazon Example

Hansson cited the difficulties faced by Amazon with its internal coding tool, Kiro, as an example of potential problems. In March, Business Insider reported that Amazon had implemented a temporary 90-day security directive requiring double-checking of changes made by engineers to prevent negative impacts on consumers.

In January, Hansson had already expressed reservations about the current level of AI, stating that it had not yet reached that of a junior engineer, although it shows promise. Today, he claims that his daily work is now centered around the AI agent.
