Armadin: Kevin Mandia Raises $190 Million for His AI Startup

Kevin Mandia, famous for founding the cybersecurity company Mandiant in 2004, is back in the spotlight with a promising new venture. After selling Mandiant to Google for the impressive sum of $5.4 billion in 2022, Mandia is embarking on a new adventure with Armadin, a startup specializing in AI-native cybersecurity.

Armadin successfully raised $189.9 million during its seed and Series A funding rounds. This funding round was led by Accel, with participation from notable investors such as GV, Kleiner Perkins, Menlo Ventures, 8VC, Ballistic Ventures, and In-Q-Tel, the CIA's investment arm. This amount is considered a record for a security startup at such an early stage, although the company's valuation has not been disclosed.

While other startups have raised similar amounts during their Series A rounds, Armadin stands out for the scale of its funding right from the start. In comparison, companies like 1Password and OneTrust raised $200 million in 2019, but they were already well-established, with 14 years and three years of existence, respectively.

Before founding Armadin, Kevin Mandia was a venture capitalist at Ballistic Ventures, a security-focused fund co-founded by Ted Schlein, a renowned investor in the field. Armadin focuses on developing autonomous cybersecurity agents capable of learning and responding to threats without human intervention. Mandia has expressed concerns about the emergence of autonomous hackers powered by AI, emphasizing that these technologies could execute attacks in minutes, a process that previously took days.

Armadin aims to equip security experts, known as "white hats," with automated agents to counter attacks carried out by "black hats." The founding team of Armadin includes talents such as Travis Lanham, former principal security engineer at Google Cloud, Evan Peña, a former executive at Mandiant, and David Slater, a former SecOps engineer at Google.
